How to Get More Done In Less Time as a New Entrepreneur

Are you working hours and hours on your business but getting nowhere?

Does the business that you started for freedom and flexibility look like the complete opposite of that right now?

Chances are its a mixture of inefficient working practises and focusing on the wrong things. I was the same before I realised I didn't want to set up another JOB for myself in my business.

Luckily you don't need to work harder, just smarter - by creating some simple shifts to ramp up your productivity and get quicker results.

When I implemented these strategies, my productivity skyrocketed, I got way more done in less time and focusing on only on the things that matter made a huge difference in both the bottom line and also how I felt.

Make no mistake your time is your biggest asset as a new entrepreneur so here's how you can make the most of what you have.

1) Working in blocks. One great way to ramp up productivity is to work in blocks of time. You pick one or two tasks that you want to complete in the specific block of time that you have e.g. 60 minutes and work on it until it’s done. This is much more effective than sitting down and working non stop for the whole day when inevitably distraction sets in and its impossible to be productive for huge lengths of time like that.

A great tool to assist you with working in blocks is the Pomodoro App or you can use an online version like this one. Don’t forget to factor in breaks when you are working for larger blocks of time.

2)) Batching like tasks Contrary to what you might be led to believe, multi-tasking is terrible for productivity. When you try to multi task and switch from task to task you actually get LESS done. In fact, multi tasking is believed to reduce productivity by around 40%. When you constantly switch between different types of tasks it takes your brain 23 minutes to get back fully focused on the original task. Just think of all the wasted time that results in. One way to overcome this is to batch similar tasks together e.g client calls on certain days to avoid this context switching (jumping from task to task which is known to reduce productivity). I have different days to focus on different tasks, client calls on certain days, content creation, emailing my list and other similar "creation" focused tasks are done when I work best and feel at my most creative - usually in the morning just after my morning routine).

3) Focused work during set hours - The great thing about using a timer app like above is that it keeps you more focused. As well as the timer, it’s essential to instil the personal discipline to make sure that you are not allowing yourself to get distracted. It’s so easy to go onto Facebook and go down the cat video rabbit hole or get distracted by what others are doing.

If you’re struggling with the self discipline to do this, try using a desktop tool to help you like this one.

4) Spend your time on revenue generating activties. It’s so easy to spend your time on busy work and procrasti-learning and before you know it the whole day has gone. Take some time to identify the money making taks in your business and spend your most productive part of the day focusing only on the money-making tasks in your business and reducing or outsourcing the others. Step away from the millionth tweak to your website and focus on the 20% of actions that bring 80% of the results.

5) Leverage your time by creating a simple easy to implement sales funnel that brings calls to your dairy and takes the grunt work out of bringing ideal clients to you. However, be aware that this can be a time suck in the beginning of your business if you are trying to do it yourself and there is a learning curve so I would suggest to work with a Coach on this. You can book a call with me to find out how I can help you implement a simple sales funnel in your business.

6) Incorporating self-care into each day. Productivity occurs when you feel at your best each day and are fresh and energised to show up fully in your biz so make sure that you build an element of self care into your day. This can be something as simple as starting your day with a morning routine, going for a walk after a long day or taking some time out to meditate. You can find out more about creating a morning routine here.

You don't have to work all the hours in the day to get results. Identify your key tasks and get focused on those. If possible outsource the tasks that don't make you money so you can focus on money-making tasks and client care and self care.
